Remarkably however, IHI did not make inroads into excavator manufacturing until 1994, much later than most of its competitors. Rather than directly compete with companies that have already established themselves by making medium and large size excavators, IHI chose to specialize in mini-excavators, also called compact excavators. As a result, within a few years, the relatively small venture started by IHI in Kentucky, USA has become the leading manufacturer of mini-excavators in the world.

The product lines in all these series include super mini-excavators, regular sized compact excavators, and everything in between. Notably, IHI does not make extremely large excavators like many of its competitors. The extensive line offered by the young venture is perhaps one of the most remarkable things about IHI. Also, all ihi excavators regardless of their line or series are designed from the ground up to accept a wide variety of excavator arm attachments that are easily installed, easily replaced, and allow the machine to perform a wide variety of jobs, cutting down the cost for companies who would otherwise have to procure other machines. However, not all models produced could accept all kinds of attachments, so when procuring an IHI brand excavator, one must take note of the attachments that could be accepted by a particular model. Though IHI is a relative newcomer, it has produced a wide variety of quality made excavators that would suit most small and medium sized jobs.
